Sorority Life: Getting Involved

I've always been the type of person that likes to have leadership roles, in high school, I was always eager to have some influence in my clubs and activities. When I got to college I craved that same kind of leadership, and I really found what I've been looking for with my sorority. My sorority has allowed me countless opportunities for leadership, whether it's a simple committee meeting, a formal position, or a volunteer position. I love getting to feel like I have influence and a say and honestly it has made me love my sorority even more.

Volunteer
Some of the best things to get involved within your sorority begin simply just as ideas. Maybe you volunteer to help the social chair with the upcoming function or volunteer to be in charge of the recruitment video, it's not always a formal position but it's a fun easy way to get involved. And you will be so appreciated.

Find What Fits You
The thing I love about a sorority is that there are so many different positions with so many different levels of time commitment and for different interests. You can always find something for you. The hardest thing is truly narrowing down what you want to be involved with!

Know it's Okay to Do Other Things
When I first started to get involved with my sorority, I thought I needed to do everything but I've slowly realized while it's important to be there you don't always have to be there. Sororities have a wide range events to try and fit different people's schedules and interests and it's not realistic to be at them all. So keep that girls night with your other friends or take that nap after a long day, there will be plenty more.

Be All There
If you commit to helping with something be all there. Even if it is not the biggest or most important event, make sure you help when necessary. Commitment is important and if you make it you need to be able to follow through. Because no one likes the person that flakes on what they said they were going to do...

With all that said, I want to emphasize how being involved with my sorority had really changed the experience for me. It's allowed me to really feel at home and encouraged me to be a more active part of the chapter. I highly recommend that whether you are involved in a sorority or another organization to get involved!

Slowing Things Down

Photo From Lifehack.org
If I'm being honest, the first few weeks back at school have been completely insane. This year I'm only taking 13 hours of classes, but I'm working two jobs and trying to get involved with my sorority and various other clubs plus trying to keep up with consistently posting and growing the blog. It's been a lot and this past week I learned that I need to slow it down a bit. I remember sitting on the quad Wednesday afternoon after finishing a day of class, enjoying my short break before heading to work and thinking that I'm just so tired. I remember simply feeling like I had nothing left to give. It was a horrible feeling because I knew I still had to make it through a 4-hour shift as a peppy employee, a nighttime study session as a diligent student, and hopefully get something up on my blog and Instagram as well. It was too much and I knew I needed to change something.

It was clear to me what area I needed to cut back on, my job. I'm not in a situation where I could get rid of my job entirely because I need to make money to support myself at school but I could definitely cut back on my hours. Not having to work quite so many nights would free up so much time for me but also allow for me to focus on my studies. It's only been a few days, but I can already tell that it is doing a world of good. I feel happier, I feel more positive. I have more time to do what is best for me.

It's really great to be busy and to be involved, but you can get to a point where it becomes too much. You have to make sure that you are never sacrificing your mental or physical health. Make time to do the things you care about most and that are important to you. Sometimes it's okay to take the back seat with certain things so you don't have to sacrifice other things that you care about. I thought I could handle it all, I thought I could write it all out in my cute little planner and everything would be okay, but I learned that it isn't always that easy. Sometimes life requires sacrifice and sometimes life requires choices. It's okay to want a break, it's okay to want time to hang out with friends. Life passes by way too quickly and you deserve to be all there.

The Well Dressed Guide: My Favorite Pants

If you've been following me, you probably know that I wear the same type of pants all the time. I thought it would be kind of fun to share my favorites. My whole life I've always had the hardest time finding pants that fit me because I have such skinny legs, all the pants I tried on would be way too loose and feel baggy when I wore them. I remember shopping around for days trying to find pants that fit like they were supposed to. After what felt like trying on 100s of pants, I finally found some I loved at Macy's, they were the Levi's 710 Super Skinny Jeans. They honestly fit me perfect. And thankfully they are available in all the colors I could ever want. They have multiple dark washes and also black. So they are pretty much the go-to pants in my closet.

But when I'm not wearing jeans, my favorites are the J.Crew Factory Gigi Pants. Basically, these are glorified leggings, but I like them because they are thicker and they kinda look like pants. They are absolutely perfect for wearing with a longer blouse or a loose sweater. They are so comfortable while still making a put together outfit.

This summer, I've been looking for the perfect pair of navy chino pants, but I haven't found them yet, so the pant struggle is definitely still alive and well. I'd love to hear what brands of pants you all love, I know I'm not the only one that has struggled with finding the perfect fit pants.

How to Survive Sickness in College

So the inevitable happened, you caught the freshman plague. I remember the first time I got sick freshman year, I had no idea what to do with myself and no idea how to make myself feel better. But since getting sick way too many times my freshman year, I’ve learned how to make the most of being sick while in college while also making sure to get better ASAP!

1. Go to Student Health
I know they probably won’t cure your illness and it’ll waste an hour of your day that you would much rather be sleeping, but if you get sick enough that you can’t go to class this is a lifesaver. Likely the receipt will be enough to excuse you from your classes/activities, save your real skips for when you need them.

2. Do the Bare Essentials
Say no to everything except what you absolutely have to do. Go to class if you can but say no to the club meetings and hanging out with your friends. Don’t worry you won’t miss out on too much.

3. Rest & Eat
Get your sleep. Go to bed early and eat every meal. If you don’t want to get out of bed be that annoying person and ask your friends to bring you some food, I promise they won’t mind. Plus, you’ll be doing it for them before long. But most importantly go to bed early!

4. Communicate
If you’re going to skip class because you’re sick, send your professor a nice email saying that. If you skip a meeting, let the leader know. People are understanding that sickness happens, but they are even more understanding if you communicate openly with them.

5. Be Courteous
Most likely you have a roommate and though they will inevitably get sick shortly after you be respectful and try to keep your germs as much away as possible. Use Lysol and hand sanitizer and just stay away from anything that you all share. Trust me when they’re sick and you’re not you’ll be happy they do the same.

Obviously, I’m not a doctor so I’m not going to tell you what medicines you should take. Call your mom or ask the doctor at student health. But I will say if you have a stuffy nose that just won’t go away try Afrin, it has been a lifesaver for me! I hope these tips are helpful in getting you feeling better in no time at all!

The Well Dressed Guide: J.Crew Factory Fall New Arrivals

Hey guys! So my plan was to have one of these Well Dressed Guide posts up every Tuesday. I knew J.Crew Factory new arrivals were coming into store on Monday, so I thought perfect I can have the post all ready to go for Tuesday. But the new arrivals didn't come online until yesterday, so I had to wait until today to share. But there are some super cute new things, I don't want you all to miss out on!

I'll be honest I've been totally annoyed with J.Crew Factory for all the ruffle sleeves, but when I saw this green top I knew I had to have it. It is so cute on, plus I love the green color. It's my only purchase so far from the new arrivals, though I fully expect a few more. The other thing that initially stood out to me was the metallic polka dot sweater, it is a fun pattern and in my favorite Teddie style. I can't wait to wear it with a maroon puffer vest, I think that would be super cute. Also, J.Crew has really been appealing to my college self with some super cute sweatshirts. I think the gray one would be great for pairing with leggings and a puffer vest and who can resist the adorable ruffles on that navy sweatshirt? If you know me, you know I love pajama sets, so that super cute gray stripe one is definitely something I'll be wanting to pick-up. And we all need a new fun colored pair of camp socks for fall and winter. The loafers are something I'm on the fence about, I think they are super cute but I'm not sure how much I would wear them. J.Crew Factory has been killing the shoe game lately. Have you shopped J.Crew Factory's new arrivals, if so what's your favorite?

I just wanted to say this because I feel like I am constantly gushing about J.Crew Factory, I am not at all sponsored by them or influenced by my employment there to talk about there products. I just genuinely love their clothes and they are what I wear pretty much all the time!

Why Change is Okay

Have you ever been afraid to change? Maybe you're scared to get that new haircut or you're scared to rock that different style top? Maybe you're scared to reach out to someone new or maybe you're scared to end something? We all get comfortable with our lives and when we get comfortable there is no incentive to change. But sometimes change is necessary, sometimes that little inkling you get is exactly what you need.

I remember last year around this time, I bought leather leggings. Leather leggings definitely don't fit into my otherwise preppy wardrobe of pinks, greens, and navy, but I liked them and thought they would be fun to style. But because I knew they weren't what people would expect me to wear, I never wore them. Okay well, I wore them once, but it was to a party and I'm sure they just looked like normal leggings. But I'm realizing that it's okay to want to wear something different. It's okay to experiment and have fun, especially with clothes. It's okay to challenge people's perceptions of you. You can bet that as soon as it cools down, those leggings will be one of the first things I style.

And while being able to change your clothing styles is important, this issue touches a bit deeper as well. Sometimes you feel trapped in a box, life feels very planned out and you're on a path that you can't seem to get off. But it's okay to jump off, it's okay to change the path you're on. Maybe it's deciding that a relationship isn't working, maybe it's deciding to change your college major or maybe it's just deciding to live a happier, healthier life. You don't ever have to feel stuck if there's something you don't like about your life than work to change it.

For me I've always struggled with negativity, I'm not a super positive person. For a long time, I kind of felt stuck, like there was no way to make myself become more positive. I think I felt scared of change, scared of what would happen if I did change. But this summer I decided that I was going to embrace a more positive lifestyle, I grabbed change with open arms. In the end, I'm so glad I did because now I find myself happier, I find myself living a life with many more smiles.

Simply put, you are never stuck. Life holds a wide range of opportunities and it's okay if you have to change your plans to get where you want to be. So wear that super cute new top and change your plans, because if it improves your life at all then it's worth it.

President's Ball 2017

Here at Wake, we go all out for homecoming: there's a week full of activities, tons of alumni buzzing around, and no shortage of a good time. This year homecoming was extra special because we had president's ball which only occurs every other year, so this is the first one I was able to attend at Wake. Basically, it's just a super fun party put on by the school with live music, yummy food, and perfect decorations. It was so fun to have an excuse to get dressed up and dance the night away with all of my friends.

Dress: Tobi // Shoes: Target // Bracelet: J.Crew Factory

I'm obsessed with this dress from Tobi, it's super comfortable to wear but also super cute with the scallop detailing. I know I'll definitely be wearing it again! Plus I didn't own a little black dress, so I figured it was time to add one to my closet. Hope you all enjoyed this post and have a great week!
